Title:  Crackback
Authors:  John Coy (FacebookTwitter)
Genre:  YA, Sports

In his gripping debut novel, acclaimed picture book author John Coy presents the high stakes world of high school football, where doing what it takes to win doesn't always mean doing the right thing.

When Miles Manning, a successful high school football player, discovers his teammates are using steroids--and one of them is his best friend--he's faced with a tough decision: Is he willing to do what it takes to win? Football is his life, and his family, especially his dad, is pinning its hopes on him. It's a lot of pressure for a high school junior to bear. This gripping look into the world of high school boys and athletes--and their struggle to be the best--is provocative and searingly honest.

Why I Picked It: It's pretty simple, but that's why I like it. It's gritty and raw.

Muddling the picture, Callie likes Mark, a senior on the team - and she would really like him not to land in jail. And Mattie, a teammate, has a roving eye that just landed on Mark . . .

Why I Picked It: It's really a great image of sports, of effort and achieving your goals.

Title:  Riptide
Author: Lindsey Scheibe
Genre: YA, Sports, Contemporary

Grace has one summer to prove she’s good enough
For Grace Parker, surfing is all about the ride and the moment. Everything else disappears. She can forget that her best friend, Ford Watson, has a crush on her that she can’t reciprocate. She can forget how badly she wants to get a surf scholarship to UC San Diego. She can forget the pressure of her parents’ impossibly high expectations.

When Ford enters Grace into a surf competition—the only way she can impress the UCSD surfing scouts—she has one summer to train and prepare. Will she gain everything she’s ever wanted or lose the only things that ever mattered?

Why I Picked It: I picked this one mostly because of the peacefulness. Calm waters, gorgeous sunset and her slow stride. Nothing rushed; you can sense that this is her element.
