What’s money between friends? But, wait who said they were friends? The lone wolf – the wizened vet – the femme fatale – the smart-mouth kid when Spike, Jet, Faye and Ed get together; it can mean only one thing: carnage is about to ensue. In keeping with the popular but off-beat anime, the manga begins a series of original stories that take the action to a whole new level. Spike, Jet and Faye all end up after the same bounty, Spike goes after a convict who’s already in prison, and Faye (the con-artist she is) ends up the victim of a con not once, but twice.

Man, this takes me back. This is actually the first Manga that I've read, though I've been enjoying is counterpart, Anime, for about 10 years. For those who don't know what Manga or Anime is, here's the Wikipedia description for each (because if I tried to explain, confusion would follow):

  • Manga:: are comics created in Japan, or by Japanese creators in the Japanese language, conforming to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century.
  • Anime::  Japanese animated productions featuring hand-drawn or computer animation. The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese, where this term references all animation.
I was first introduced to anime when I was had a lot of free time on my hands  freshman year of college. And, surprise surprise, my first experience was Cowboy Bebop. A friend thought it was a good place to start; she was right. I watched all 26-episodes in about 3 days.

Enough backstory. This manga contains 4 stories:

  • IT'S SHOWTIME:: I think this is a good way to get into the the story. You met most of the gang, Spike, Jet, Faye and Ed and get to experience their crazy dynamic of working together and the hijinks that ensue.
  • WE WILL ROCK YOU:: I liked this story. It was really sad, their bounty's story. All of pain, just to be loved and admired.
  • CHEAP TRICK:: This was another cute story. Faye always kind of annoyed me, so I kind of like it when things don't quite go her way...
  • BLACK DIAMOND:: I think this is a good way to get into the the story. You met most of the gang, Spike, Jet, Faye and Ed and get to experience their crazy dynamic of working together and the hijinks that ensue.

FINAL THOUGHTS:: To anyone looking to get into Manga or Anime, I highly recommend Cowboy Bebop. I'm by no means a superfan of either medium, but this series has introduced me to both.

I'm going to close slightly venturing off topic by saying that one of the best things about the anime adaptation of Cowboy Bebop — and all animes actually  is the music. Each anime has opening and closing theme songs, which will often midway through the series. My anime playlist grows and grows, and I enjoy having horribly-sung karaoke sessions in my car :)

Here's the opening theme song, Tank! by The Seatbelts, and the closing theme song, The Real Folk Blues by The Seatbelts (ft. Mai Yamane). Both of these songs are amazing!
